EYFS

 EYFS 12-Week Dance Programme (1-hour sessions)Overall Aims

  • Develop gross motor skills (running, jumping, balancing, turning).
  • Promote rhythm, coordination, and spatial awareness.
  • Encourage expressive movement and creativity.
  • Support listening skills and following instructions.

Session Structure (1 Hour)

  1. Warm-Up (10 mins)
    • Simple stretches, gentle movement, “wake up the body” games.
    • Example: “Follow the Leader” or “Animal Movements.”

    • Introduce a new movement skill or dance concept.
    • Focus on balance, coordination, direction, or rhythm.

    Week 1 – All About Me / Body Awareness

  • Focus: Body parts, moving safely in space
  • Warm-Up: “Simon Says” with body parts (jump, stretch, wiggle arms/legs)
  • Skill Focus: Identify and move different body parts, explore high/low and fast/slow movements
  • Creative Dance: Explore different ways of moving arms, legs, and whole body freely
  • Routine: Short sequence combining arm, leg, and body movements
  • Cool Down & Reflection: Gentle stretches and talk about favourite movement

Week 2 – Animals / Movement Imitation

  • Focus: Gross motor skills, rhythm, imagination
  • Warm-Up: “Animal Parade” – children move like their favourite animals
  • Skill Focus: Jumping, crawling, balancing, changing speed
  • Creative Dance: Explore movements of different animals; make up short sequences
  • Routine: Combine 3–4 animal movements into a mini-dance

Week 3 – Exploring Space

  • Focus: Direction, levels, personal space

  • Warm-Up: “Shape Freeze” – children make shapes with their bodies and freeze

  • Creative Dance: Explore making letters, stars, triangles with body

Week 5 – Music & Rhythm

  • Focus: Listening skills, timing, beat awareness
  • Warm-Up: Move to different beats of music (slow/fast, loud/quiet)

  • Creative Dance: Explore movement to different tempos and dynamics

Week 6 – Seasons / Weather
